Design Technology at Withernsea Junior School
We teach our Design Technology as part of a theme with other subjects such as History, Geography and Art.
Theme we follow are usually linked more to the History and Geography and the design technology work complements this.
For example in Year 6 we look at World War Two and build shelters, we also look at food technology and rationing and wartime menus.
We all have a Creative Journal which is used to develop our ideas, collect ideas, thoughts and designs. These books have a personalised cover and are very much about individual ideas and their development. They are not formally 'marked' but the teacher may ask questions to develop ideas.
Over the year children design and make a range of materials which include electrical and mechanical components, food, mouldable materials, stiff and flexible sheet materials and textiles.
All classes complete some art work every term, however Mrs Harper and Mrs Sutherland form the Arts team to lead this subject in school, also ensure we have the right resources and a consistent approach to teaching and learning.
Every three years we evaluate art as a subject, we observe Design technology lessons being taught by all teachers, look at how the teachers plan the subject, assess the final finished products and we ask the children about their lessons for their thoughts and ideas.
Using all this information we prepare a three year action plan to develop the subject.
We have good resources for this subject- with general resources in the classrooms. Them we have specialised resources such as a woodwork trolley, food technology trolley to support our work. We use ICT effectively to support our work including the internet, interactive whiteboard, video and ordinary cameras.
We have a lot of Konnex materials for construction and have also successful entered teams in the Konnex challenge with other neighbouring schools.
Our European project involved designing and making a vehicle for the project mascot - Peter Bear - this involved ALL pupils spending a day designing and making:
PETER BEAR'S FANTASTIC VEHICLE
